They sit just minutes apart on the same stretch of impossibly white sand, so most visitors assume Fort Walton Beach and Destin are interchangeable. They're not — and after years of hosting families in both, we can tell you that picking the right one is the difference between a good beach week and a perfect one. Here's the honest local breakdown. (And no, we're not picking a side — we host in both.)
Fort Walton Beach & Okaloosa Island: the laid-back side
Okaloosa Island is a barrier island of wide, walkable public beaches and a noticeably calmer pace. This is the side of the coast where you can find a patch of sand without feeling like you're at a festival, where families with young kids settle in for the day, and where the big draw is simply the water itself.
The anchor attraction is the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, one of the country's original marine parks and an easy half-day when everyone needs a break from the sun — check their current shows and experiences when you're planning. Beyond that, Okaloosa Island is about the essentials done well: gentle Gulf access, a boardwalk, and room to breathe.
Fort Walton Beach suits you if…
Where we host here: Heaven on Surf, our first-floor one-bedroom on Okaloosa Island. Gulf views from the living room and balcony, and being on a low floor means no long wait on a high-rise elevator loaded with beach carts — it's one flight of stairs, or the elevator a few steps from the door, down to ground level. From there it's a 2–3 minute walk to the sand over a dune walkover that's a ramp, not steps, so strollers and wheeled coolers roll straight down. There's a heated pool for the cooler months, and enough clever sleeping to fit six. It's the “easy beach trip you keep meaning to take.”
Destin: the lively side
Cross over and Destin turns up the energy. This is the harbor town — home to HarborWalk Village, where the boardwalk, the restaurants, and the live music keep the waterfront busy well into the evening. It's the jumping-off point for Crab Island, the shallow sandbar gathering spot a short boat ride out, and the heart of the Emerald Coast's legendary charter-fishing scene. More restaurants, more shopping, more to do after the sun goes down.
Destin rewards groups who want options steps from the sand — the kind of trip where half the crew wants to fish, half wants to shop, and everyone meets back up for dinner on the harbor.
Destin suits you if…
Where we host here: Pure DESTINation, our three-bedroom townhome built for groups — it sleeps ten across three bedrooms and flex sleeping, with a private grill-out patio and a private community beach about a two-minute walk from the front door. Everyone under one roof, the harbor and Crab Island minutes away.
