Map & Location: Destin & Okaloosa Island
Exactly where our homes sit on the Emerald Coast, and how to get to them.
Location is the whole game on the Emerald Coast. A block off the beach and a Gulf-front balcony are two completely different vacations, and "Destin" on a listing can mean anywhere across a fifteen-mile stretch. So here's exactly where you'd be staying.
Both of our homes sit directly on the Gulf — one in Destin, one on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach, on opposite sides of the Destin bridge. Click either pin below for details and photos.
Destin and Okaloosa Island: what the map doesn't tell you
Our two homes are about 8 miles apart along Highway 98, on opposite sides of the Destin bridge. They share the same water, the same white quartz sand, and the same sunsets. What differs is the pace.
Destin
The busier, more built-up side. Destin has the harbor, the charter fishing fleet, the biggest concentration of restaurants and shopping, and most of the nightlife on this stretch of coast. If you want to walk out of the house and have options, this is the side you want.
Okaloosa Island, Fort Walton Beach
Just across the bridge, and noticeably quieter. The island is a narrow barrier strip with the Gulf on one side and Choctawhatchee Bay on the other, and much of it is protected land that will never be developed — which is why the beach here doesn't fill up the way Destin's does. The Boardwalk and the pier are the main gathering spots.
Getting here: airports and driving distances
The closest commercial airport to both homes is Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) in Valparaiso. It's small, easy to get in and out of, and usually the least stressful way in. Two larger airports are within driving range and sometimes carry better fares.
| Airport | To Okaloosa Island (Heaven on Surf) |
To Destin (Pure DESTINation) |
|---|---|---|
| VPS — Destin–Fort Walton Beach | about 10 miles | about 17 miles |
| PNS — Pensacola International | about 46 miles | about 53 miles |
| ECP — Northwest Florida Beaches (Panama City) | about 59 miles | about 51 miles |
Worth noticing: the two bigger airports sit on opposite sides of us, so which one is closer depends on which home you book. Pensacola is the nearer of the two for Okaloosa Island; Panama City is nearer for Destin. If VPS fares look steep, check both before you settle.
You'll want a car either way. This is a spread-out stretch of coast, and the beach towns aren't connected by public transit.
A word on drive times: we've given distances rather than minutes on purpose. Highway 98 is the only through road here, and in summer it backs up badly — especially around the Destin bridge in the late afternoon. A drive that takes twenty minutes in February can take twice that in July. Check your maps app the day you travel, and build in a buffer on arrival day.
Common questions about the location
How far are you from the beach?
Zero. Both homes are Gulf front — you walk out and you're on the sand. No crossing the highway, no shuttle, no "beach access two blocks away."
Is Okaloosa Island part of Destin?
No, though they're often lumped together. Okaloosa Island is part of Fort Walton Beach, on the west side of the Destin bridge. Listings sometimes advertise island properties as "Destin" because it's the better-known name — worth knowing when you're comparing places.
Which side should I stay on?
If your trip is built around restaurants, the harbor, and having plenty to do after dark, choose Destin. If it's built around a quieter beach and an easier pace, choose the island. Not sure? Call us — we own on both sides and we have no reason to push you either way.
Do I need a car?
Yes, realistically. You can get by without one if you plan to stay put, but anything beyond walking distance means driving.
